GENERAL situation. Rebellion may now be considered as virtually collapsing. Considerable northern army is now facing Nanking from the opposite side of the river, few rebels remain in the town, and it is improbable that these will offer serious resistance. Shanghai- Wusung area has been completely cleared of rebel forces. There has been fighting at Chinkiang, but loyal Yangchow division is now in occupation, and southerners have apparently dispersed. Hunan has officially renounced its independence, and no fighting has apparently taken place either on Hunan-Hupei border or in the latter province. Independence of Eastern Szechuan, proclaimed by the troops at Chungking, has also been withdrawn.
General Lung has entered Canton with Kuangsi troops, and controls the situation.
